FAQs
What is the itinerary?
We take our flight to Reykjavik and depending on flights times by mid-afternoon we transfer from the airport to a drop-off point before our campsite. If time permits then the warm up trek climbs hilly ground, crosses rivers and ends on flat terrain before reaching camp. Once settled for the evening we hear more about the days ahead from our guide. It will feel strange going to bed tonight as there is almost 24 hour daylight in summer – black out eye masks are highly recommended! We stay over-night at Landmannahellir campsite.
DAY 2 ÁLFTAVATN
Our first, longest and toughest day of our trek, but for many it is likely to be the highlight due to the stunning scenery. We spend much of the day on a trek to the highest point of the route at 1046m, which is likely to be snow covered and then descending. We pass wonderful sulphur springs and streams, steaming vents and gurgling hot springs, ridges and gorges, and end with a flat grassy plain to the campsite and lake at Alfavatn. A tough challenge but an incredible one!
DAY 3 EMSTRUR
We set off over a couple of small hills, crossing two rivers along the way which will ensure that everyone is wide awake and raring to go. After
around 3km we reach a set of huts where we rest a while. From here the terrain is flat all the way to a large river where we cross the bridge
and join a rough country road for about 1km. Here we meet the largest of all the rivers we will cross. Here we have a well deserved lunch stop before continuing along the 4x4 tracks for about 3km. The
trail then leaves the road and we trek 1km to a bridge over the next river and re rejoin the road. A few kilometres further on we come to a sandy gully leading off road. We follow the gully towards the base of Mount Hattfell to a flat lava sand plain with two amazing gorges and stunning views. It s another hour along the plain in a slight downhill
direction to our campsite at Emstrur (617m).
DAY 4 THORSMÖRK - REYKJAVÍK
We set off along the Markarfljot canyon, which is well over 100m deep, heading in and out of small valleys. As we draw nearer to Thorsmörk the landscape becomes greener and more wooded. It is a stark contrast to the barren lava flows we encountered earlier in the trek. Three dramatic glaciers preside over the valley: Mýrdalsjökull, Eyjafjallajökull and Tindafjallajökull (jökull means glacier in Icelandic). We ford the Pronga River before descending to our overnight camp.
Late afternoon we transfer to Reykjavík/Hafnarfjördur (2½ hours) to our local hotel, where we have a final night celebration dinner.
DAY 5 LONDON
Today we return to the airport for our flight back to the UK. The end to an incredible adventure on a small volcanic island in the middle of
the Atlantic. Depending on the carrier our return flight to London is early morning or late afternoon.
